08.09月寂寞.夏.日赴美巡演前邓裴接受CiN Weekly专访
Can you give me some background on your band? How you formed and all?
可以给我介绍下你们乐队的背景吗?怎么组建的以及其他方面
邓裴:我们开始职业做音乐是96年,从需长发和大段失真solo到现在的穿着随意和在音乐中表露的实验先锋性,经历了一个音乐与思想上的蜕变过程,这点你可以从1996-2001-2006-200?的作品得到信息。之前我们定下了严格的乐队规矩,我们要求乐手不做和独立音乐无关的事情不拷贝流行音乐不随便到其他乐队客串乐手,因为它会影响我们音乐的纯粹性和唯一性,我们从做乐队开始就建立自己的队费,每次演出留下15%用来回补接下来的演出开销和设备消耗,现在我们依然保持这些做法并且从未有过特例。过程中换了几任无法承受“苦难”的乐手,剩下的人在“苦难”中成长实现音乐中的可能性,就这样。
China just finished up the Olympics. Did you find any inspiration in that event?
奥运刚刚在中国结束,从这个项目上来说有没有给你什么基于者启发(鼓舞)
邓裴:我不说体育只强调艺术吧,基于我们对艺术的标准奥运一些艺术设计和艺术意识只能是接近我们希望的但没有超过我们预期。我不认为它超越了“雅典”,而且我相信“伦敦”会做得更好,人类生存只有一个最小单位就是世界我们应该"世界是家"的角度看这个问题,要为一次超越一次而欢喜而不是狭隘的自满。所以鼓舞不知从何说起。
开幕式一些表演另我感动,比如彩色画卷,比如太级舞者,比如忧伤的主题歌,我很喜欢这个歌的MV里有落泪的镜头,再比如烟火脚印。但我不知道为什么一些西方人会认为烟火是电脑合成的?我想如果西方对中国的认识是针对政治那么这次已经变化成偏见蔓延到了中国艺术。所以接触是艺术基础,这个时候报纸杂志电视宣传甚至网络显得多么的主观和无能,你自己的认识才是艺术的正确面目。我希望我们到达尽可能多的世界舞台用咫尺距离相互接触而不是你的“我听说”。如果谈到启发我想是我们应该如何为世界揭开中国“国家艺术与民间艺术区别的秘密”?
Beijing had the spotlight then. Are you noticing more attention on your music?
北京成了一个焦点,你有没有发现到你们的音乐得到了更多关注?
邓裴:更多关注是一直争取的但我们并不奢求它,因为如果你用探索的方式去做音乐你的音乐只可能越来越小众,我想我们应该是给人的音乐感觉越来越深刻才正确。我希望北京在10年后再成为焦点,因为那个时候也许天空更蓝烟蒂和痰迹更少。
How would Western bands view Beijing’s indie-rock scene?
西方乐队该怎么看北京的独立摇滚氛围。
邓裴:独立摇滚在北京发展很快,只不过它现在是以潮流的形式存在,很遗憾。
Why is it important for your band to come to the US for four shows?
为什么对于你们乐队来说来美国演出四场是重要的。
邓裴:是的,无论从现场经验设备组合还是心理素质来看狭小单调的音乐环境都是无法另我们快速进步的,我们需要更多眼界耳界提高自己。美国一些音乐也许不是我们喜欢的或者早已不喜欢了,但美国音乐家的艺术表现值得我们去学习,这一点在我们之前的美国巡演就体会到了。
If there was a song of yours American audiences needed to know the lyrics to, which would it be? And what are those lyrics?
如果有一个美国听众应该知道的歌词,会是那首?歌词是什么?
邓裴:那么他最好理解中文。

September 2008 Deng Pei Interviewed by CiN Weekly Before the U.S. Tour
CiN Weekly:Can you give me some background on your band? How you formed and all?
Deng Pei: We started to make music since 1996 as full time band, from long hair and long paragraph of distortion solo to now wear casual clothes and the music is more experimental and progressive after a transformation process upon music and thinking. You can get a idea from the works 1996-2001-2006-200?. At the very beginning we have rules for the band, we ask the band member not to do cover music, never do anything that is not concern with indie music and can’t perform at other band, because this will affect the purity and uniqueness of the band. We started to save some money as the band fund since we formed. Each showcase we keep 15% from the income as the cost of equipment and shows. Now we still follow the rule and never have an exception. During this process we changed several band members who can’t bear the “suffering”, the rest band members are more mature and make the possibility of music come true in “suffering”. That’s it.
CiN Weekly:China just finished up the Olympics. Did you find any inspiration in that event?
Deng Pei: I just want to talk about the art but not the sports. Base on our art standard some design and art consciousness just close to our hope but haven’t exceed our hope. I don’t think it’s better than “Athens” and we believe “London” will be better. The smallest unit when human lives is the world, we should look at this point upon” world is home”. We will feel joy when beyond before but not self-satisfied.
Some part of opening ceremony impressed me. As color scroll, Tai chi dancers, the sad theme song, I really like the weeping scene in that music video and the fireworks footprint. But I don’t know why some western people thought it’s generated by computer. I think if western people know China is only about political and then this kind of prejudice is affected the Chinese art. Contact in live is the base of art. At that time newspaper, magazines, TV even internet are all subjective and impuissant. Your own opinion about art is true. So I wish we can perform at different stage in different place, is not you heard from somewhere but before your eyes and your ears. So about “inspiration” , is we should think about how to explain the different between Chinese country art and folk art.
CiN Weekly:Beijing had the spotlight then. Are you noticing more attention on your music?
Deng Pei: more attention is what we always try to fighting for but not extravagant expected. Because when you make music in a exploring way, your audience will become a small crowd. I think to impress audience more profound will be great. I wish 10 years later Beijing have a spotlight again, because at that time maybe the sky will more blue , less cigarette tips and spit.
CiN Weekly:How would Western bands view Beijing’s indie-rock scene?
Deng Pei: Indie rock in Beijing is developing really fast, but it existence as a trend, it’s a pity.
CiN Weekly:Why is it important for your band to come to the US for four shows?
Deng Pei: Yes, no matter from these aspects: live experience, equipments and psychological quality. In a monotonous surrounding can’t let us develop faster. We need to see more and listen more to improve. Although some music in U.S. are not we prefer or we didn’t like it long ago. But American Musician’s art expression is worth to learn. We knew this since last time U.S. tour.
CiN Weekly:If there was a song of yours American audiences needed to know the lyrics to, which would it be? And what are those lyrics?
Deng Pei: well then the best is he can understand Chinese.
